Million Mom March May 14, 2000

Did you know that the accidental gun death rate of children in the United States is nine times higher than in the other 25 industrialized countries COMBINED* I raise my hat to Donna Dees-Thomases, who calls herself "just one of a million"; she is the organizer of the Million Mom March. This takes place on Mothers' Day, May 14, 2000. Like most of us Moms she was horrified by the Granada Hills Day Camp shooting on August 10th, 1999, and wanted to do something about it. Worse yet, this is just one of many serial incidents where children are being killed. You may not even remember this particular incident because so many more have happened since then, culminating in the latest (as I wrote this) killing of a six-year old by a classmate. I worry that we are becoming desensitized to this epidemic of killing. A recent dog tragedy in Silicon Valley last week received more press space, public outcry and financial donations than a fatal human tragedy that occurred the same week in the same area.
