Dear siliconmom: I was having a sad evening where I felt the weight of the world and there wasn't anyone to talk to. So my solution? I went to Google and searched for "static mom", hoping to find a website about the struggles of motherhood and something that might guide me. I was intrigued by the interactive component of your site and I found some of the stories appealing. Thank you for reaching back to me. It makes the world feel smaller and gentler. Sincerely, Sue from Vancouver
LETTERS Dear siliconmom: I have an 11-month-old, beautiful girl. But as good as she is, makes life an amazing and often difficult, challenge. I have a hard time telling my mom and sister the struggle I have. Thank you for your fresh & truthful view of motherhood. Now I know I am not an inadequate mother for feeling overwhelmed at times. Most of all, I am not alone... Thanks again! Dakota's mom ***
LETTERS Dear siliconmom: I heard your piece on NPR about becoming a Citizen. I became a mom in SV last summer and started back to work a few months later. It's a struggle in the valley -working as much as we do-and I wonder how other moms do this, especially single moms. The one thing that is lacking in my life is a group of other moms that I can get together with and share the trials and tribulations of being a working mom. How can I obtain a sense of balance? I love the pace and authority of my job and I adore and want the best for my daughter. All the women I've met have had some circumstance that was special to them; they carved out their own niche, and they make it work outside the boundaries of what has been considered the norm. Looking forward to joining the discussion and meeting some other moms! Laura Ward laura@monkeyflower.com I put Laura in touch with lasmadres.org where there is a working moms group- You can contact her also, laura@monkeyflower.com Alison ps Laura: look forward to reading your essay discussing career vs. kids! ***
It's a sad,mad world While the world was falling apart, we pretended everything was normal and tried to hide out in tradition. As an American living in Britain, my lifetime imbued belief in the world pecking order has been toppled. Access to my family can no longer be viewed as just a rather long commute...
